Sloth are medium-sized mammals. They are related to anteaters and have a similar set of specialized claws.
Extant sloths are tree dweling and live in the jungles of Central and South America. They get their name Sloth because they are so slow moving.
Aquatic sloths and many ground sloths are extinct. some grew to be the size of elephants.
A single sloth can be a good habitat for other organisms like moths, beetles, cockroaches, fungi and algae.
Some Sloths diet consist of buds, tender shoots, and leaves, mainly of Cecropia trees. These Soths are called folivores. Some two-toed sloths also eat insects, small reptiles.
Their main food source are leaves. They provide very little energy or nutrients and are hard to digest. To compensate they have large, specialized, slow-acting stomachs with multiple compartments so the symbiotic bacteria can break down the tough leaves.
To collect leaves that are out of reach, Sloths’ tongues can stick out of their mouths 10 to 12 inches. Two thirds of their body weight consists of the contents of its stomach. The digestive process can take a month or more to complete.
In most mammals, hairs grow toward the extremities, but because sloths spend so much time upside down, their hairs grow away from their extremities.
Some sloths are usually 50 and 60 cm long with a stubby tail 6-7 cm long.
They have short flat heads, big eyes, short snouts, long legs, and tiny ears. Sloths are so cute!
