The koala is a  marsupial native to Australia. It is the only extant representative of the family and its closest living relatives are the wombats. They are often mistakenly referred to as bears but are most closely related to kangaroos and wombats and so raise their young, called joeys, in pouches until they are fully developed, usually about six months. They will stay with their mother for another six months to learn how to forage for food. They are tree dwelling animals well adapted with opposing digits to climb and hold onto tree branches. Their main food source are the leaves of eucalyptus trees.

Their home range is the forests of eastern Australia and they grow in size to about 3 feet long and weigh 15-30 pounds.
